GRAPEGROWER & WINEMAKER
The Grenache this year came from Uncle Neville’s block, which is a 50 year old vineyard grown on deep sandy soils in the Vine Vale sub-region of the Barossa Valley floor. The Shiraz comes from A-Block on our own vineyard here at Whistler, which is the famous Kalimna 3C clone. The Shiraz was lovingly hand-picked and foot-stomped by our loyal mailing list customers on the 7th of March. And the Mataro this year came from Roenfeldt’s, which is a 40 year old vineyard between Nuriootpa and Greenock.
Each variety was picked separately on different days when they were perfectly ripe. They were fermented separately in the winery, mainly in old concrete open fermenters. The Shiraz and Mataro components both had some whole bunches thrown in the fermenter to add a bit more spice and complexity to the wine. All wild yeast and natural malo. All foot stomped and basket pressed. The Grenache component was kept in stainless steel to retain its bright, youthful character, while the Shiraz and Mataro went to old French oak.
Vibrant red colour with an intoxicating nose of blueberries, bubble gum, white pepper and hippy shop. This wine is juicy, crunchy and refreshing to drink. Designed to drink young, this wine goes really well with food, but it is completely smashable on its own.
Alc: 12.5% pH: 3.62 T.A.: 5.94 g/l
