GRAPEGROWER & WINEMAKER
Martin Pfeiffer & Josh Pfeiffer
Grown on our Heysen Estate vineyard, which surrounds our Cellar Door, this fruit is sourced from a single clone (Kalimna 3c) within our original Shiraz block, planted in 1994 on deep loam with ironstone outcrops. 2018 was a low-yielding, yet superb year, with only 5.7 tonnes harvested from this two hectare block.
This wine is made entirely from blocks A and B on our Heysen Estate vineyard, the famous Kalimna 3C clone of Shiraz. The berry size is extremely small, producing a very concentrated Barossa Shiraz. The fruit was harvested in the cool of the night and fermented in traditional small open concrete fermenters for 10 days before it was basket pressed to barrel. Only two barrels were selected for this blend, both second fill French oak hogsheads. After 18 months in barrel, the wine was blended and bottled with no fining or filtration. The pinnacle of our vineyard and winemaking efforts from the stellar 2018 vintage.
Only 533 bottles produced- This wine reflects the very best of our efforts from the 2018 vintage, with its classic black pepper and plum aromas. Loads of dark berries, mocha and elegant oak characters on the palate lead to a soft, smooth finish that persists for a few minutes. This wine will benefit from an hour in the decanter while it is young.
Alcohol: 14.0% pH: 3.58 T.A.: 6.56 g/l
This wine will drink well until 2034.
94 + Points - Gary Walsh (The Wine Front) - “Rich, but balanced. It’s a traditional Barossa Shiraz with a more modern sensibility. Black fruit, liquorice, creamy oak, perfume and spice. Fleshy, supple tannin, even delivery of wholesome flavour, settled acidity, saline and long. So nicely done.”
